Why so much erotica sucks

The problem is the shameless contempt some erotica writers show for the reader. Contempt is when you keep taking their time and money while acting like they don’t deserve effort. When spicy authors talk about erotica as an addiction or treat their own readers like marks pulling a slot machine lever, they are admitting they don’t respect their audience.

Erotica has eternally had a reputation for being cheesy and poorly-written, though hasn’t it? I think there’s always been a sizeable proportion of erotica writers who just want to knock out a story as quickly as possible, with little care or interest in creating ‘good writing’. And don’t even get me started on the recent issue with the seemingly omnipresent AI slop.
I’m at the other end of the scale: obsessively revising and taking, I estimate, about twenty hours to write, edit, and illustrate a 3000-word short. I aim to publish once every two to three weeks, so I make work for myself since I have a full time day job too.
I can’t put something out unless I feel it’s the best I’m currently capable of, though.
There is good stuff out there (of course!), the question is how to steer people away from the dross and get something which treats them with the respect they deserve into their hands, instead.
